Michael Jackson and the Culture of American Enabling

enabler- one that enables another to achieve an end ; especially : one who enables another to persist in self-destructive behavior (as substance abuse) by providing excuses or by making it possible to avoid the consequences of such behavior (Definition from Merriam-Webster)

The publicity stemming around Michael Jackson’s memorial service today at the Staples Center forced me to acknowledge MJ’s fans enabling ways in my column today. Michael Jackson always left me bemused by his incredible talent, his strange behavior and his fans blind acceptance of all things Michael. And make no mistake about it but the adoring fans did enable Michael Jackson’s bizarre behavior. Their blind acceptance of Michael Jackson enabled his bizarre behavior and hastened his very death. Had the fans reacted early on in his career in repulsion to MJ’s bizarre self-mutilation with numerous plastic surgeries, germaphobic behavior, skin bleaching, his predilection for young boys perhaps Michael Jackson would have tempered his behavior and would not have been so deviant later on in his life. But if you are an enabler and accepting of bad behavior it is not surprising that the aberrant behavior often spirals into new and ever more grotesque and destructive gyrations.

To assume that enabling is a one way street is also wrong. Fans and sycophants, such as the Reverend Al Sharpton, took advantage of Michael Jackson’s foibles while seemingly championing his cause. In general, the enabler or codependent wants to feel needed and enabling validates their own existence or in some instances serves their own selfish goals such as a hefty contribution to one’s church. Moreover, enablers don’t want to change the dependent behavior nor do they want to participate in the exercise of self-sacrifice.

Fan’s often argue that Michael Jackson’s excesses were the idiosyncratic behavior of an eccentric musical genius as though being a genius exonerates you from acknowledging the norms of a society. I’m sorry, Einstein and Mozart were geniuses, Michael Jackson was just a very talented entertainer, perhaps the best of his generation but he was still just an entertainer. Okay, Einstein married his cousin and he did have that wild hair style yet he didn’t go off the deep-end but, in fact, Einstein became a great humanist in his later years long after his intellectual skills had peaked. Michael Jackson could have done the same, after all he had the following but instead he just sung deeper and deeper into his drug induced haze enabled by an adoring fan base that could see no wrong in their self-proclaimed king of pop. For one to suggest otherwise one would have to incur shrill, vituperative rebuttals from those very same adoring fan base.

But Michael Jackson is just the tip of the American enabling iceberg. Americans are engaging in enabling like they never had before. Obesity runs rampant as children and later the morbidly obese adults are enabled by numerous family members. When somebody weighs close to half a ton you know somebody is diligently shopping, buying and shoveling a never ending supply of food into the obese shut-ins mouth. It’s so easy to say to someone here eat this and watch television, it’s not your fault your overweight and then pass off the enabling as love! You can weigh in pounds their enabling love!

Moreover, American enabling has a far darker side than just Michael Jackson and obesity, just witness the drug cartel wars that plaque Mexico. What the hell does that have to do with enabling you may ask? Any fool can argue that the failed political and judicial systems of Mexico are the root cause of the drug violence but our drug habits and the ensuing money enable this corruption. Without the billions of American drug dollars you can’t buy a Mexican judge nor can you corrupt a local politician or police chief. Yet we smoke our pot as though there is no consequence to our seemingly benign but cool drug usage and go into instant denial when somebody has the temerity to suggest otherwise. In any case, a successful war on drugs is an impossibility when so many of our fellow Americans are collaborating with the enemy, enabling the enemy so to speak. (By the way, the libertarian in me says legalize the dope to take away the corrupting influence of the drug money while the social conscious part of me recognizes the vast pitfalls of what legalizing drugs will do to an addictive personality.)

The enabling and denials don’t end there. Our love of cheap oil, of course, enables all sorts of horrendous behavior in the Middle East. Without our oil dollars to fuel a building boom in Saudi Arabia Osama Bin Laden would never have the money to fund the Taliban and 9/11. Instead of selling the rope to hang ourselves, as the communists had hoped, we instead send oil dollars to fuel the terrorist engines. Why? Because we don’t want to, or have the willpower, to kick the SUV habit no matter how many polar caps we may melt in the process. Enablers have a tough time in making the hard decisions for themselves and the others they enable.

Furthermore, American dollars funding abhorrent terrorist behavior is nothing new for this country. For years Irish-Americans supported the activities of the IRA while Cuban Americans continue to funnel much needed dollars to Cuban relatives and into Castro’s failed regime. By golly, enabling is an American tradition just like apple pie!

I don’t expect this to change any time soon nor do I expect our greatest enablers, our brave politicians, to lead the way out of the land of enabling. So Michael Jackson rest in peace, you’re sad destiny was determined by your own neuroses and your enablers alike! What a depressing day and such a waste of a great talent but not surprising when your paramount interest is just to be entertained!

Erik John Bertel

FloresGirl Twitter Supsended, A Victim of Spatwitters and twimmers

I could never find a good use for Twitter. Really, are we that insecure we have to be connected to the world 24×7? As a writer I don’t mind being alone nor do I hesitate to talk to myself when alone, after all, it’s the one way I guarantee at least one intelligent conversation during the course of the day. But then I thought why not use Twitter to highlight some of the more pithy comments from Flores Girl. I have been doing so since May and have a garnered a few followers and a lot more of the stupid spammers I called Spatwitters or twimmers! I want to give away book and they want to sell me their moronic services.

On Friday I got a ton of followers in a two hours spam, you got it Spatwitters at work selling me new get rich schemes, Internet marketing secrets, SEO and other crap I don’t much care about. So I was away on vacation in Montauk when this all happened. Guess what happen? The mental giants at Twitter suspended my account! Can you imagine getting your email blocked because you received too much spam and you did everything you could to protect yourself? Amazing! Here is my reply to Twitter:

Wait a second, I get spatwitted (Twitter spammed) on Friday and you suspend my account? What prescription meds do you people take at Twitter? I don’t get it? Go after the idiot spammers in particular the BS like http://socialmediaclicks.com. They flooded my account with over 35 followers, all pushing http://socialmediaclicks.com, while I was away on vacation. I don’t have all day to check the veracity of who is following my novel particularly when I am away. Block their idiot accounts not mine otherwise Web 2.0 is going to look like that same crap we have on Web 1.0! This is great fodder for my blog, thanks nitwits!

I will keep you posted about twimmers and Twitter’s inadequate response to this serious threat to the viability of their platform.

NRA Endorses a New Guns for Terrorists Drive

Just when you think the extremists in the NRA, the National Rifle Association, have hit an new low with their past support for armor piercing bullets and automatic assault weapons they begin a even more preposterous stance by supporting guns for terrorists. You heard right folks. In a letter to the Attorney General NRA executive director Chris Cox said the bill, offered last week by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., “would allow arbitrary denial of Second Amendment rights based on mere ‘suspicions’ of a terrorist threat.”  Hell, they can listen in on all of our private conversations but we can’t take this simple step to protect ourselves?  What the @#$%? We can’t err on the side of caution because some wacko may have to wait a few extra weeks for his assault rifle or explosives?

The NRA has decided that our terrorists threat lists are not sufficient grounds for stopping somebody from buying weapons or explosives. Over the past over 90% of people on the terrorist list have been able to purchase these goodies, not because the list didn’t identify them as possible terrorists, but because there is no federal law preventing them from doing so. Seems the NRA is concerned the terrorist’s  rights maybe crushed by the heavy hand of government and that the list maybe faulty.  Hello, the NRA is right about the legitimacy of the terrorist list, it’s a joke,  but then fix the damn list before more people die will ya ?  Haven’t we spent enough money on Homeland Security to get this right?  Does anybody ever get fired for doing a crap job in the Federal government other than Brownie?

Moreover, that model of moral courage aka the nutless wonders in both the Democratic and Republican parties blocked a vote on a similar bill during the last session. Obama won’t go near this issue either.  Is it me or am I missing something here?  We can argue endlessly about torturing  terrorists but there’s no argument about selling guns or explosives to them?  And no I don’t want ban all guns just the ones going to the terrorists.  Sounds reasonabl but I guess common sense is strangely out of vogue nowadays.

Cheers Erik John Bertel

Wow, Woman fined $1.9 million for illegal downloads more than Madoff’s Thieving Partner

Amazing and really aggravating but a federal jury fined a woman $1.9 million for downloading 24 songs or roughly 3 albums. You heard right. That works out to $80,000 a song and it just goes to show you how big business owns both Congress and the regulators. This woman, Jammie Thomas-Rasset’s,  stole about $24 worth of songs but the fine on one song alone is bigger than the fine levied on one of Bernie Madoff’s crooked partners.  Can you imagine being fined $80,000 for a Lady Gaga song? Oh, wait that was Sheryl Crow but you get the idea.  I wonder how much Sheryl will get of this windfall?  Oops, I forgot this money is slated to go to Rep. Tom Feeney’s (ex-R-Fla.) reelection campaign.

The Recording Industry Association of America is a disgrace and like the banking industry in this country has absolutely no shame. Worse, you would think the SEC would show this type of tenacity when Bernie Made-off was stealing $60 billion dollars.  How big was the fine that was levied on the idiots who ran AIG into the ground?  Oh yeah, I forgot they got rewarded with golden parachutes instead.

And you wonder why people in this country are buying handguns at such a record pace?  They all know somebody owns Congress and its not the people!  They also know that it’s alright to steal billions from the little guys but don’t you dare steal $80 from a big industry armed to the teeth with lawyers and with a coterie of Congressmen in their slimy pockets. Oh, yeah lawyers and congressmen are basically the same species of slime aren’t they?  Wait, that’s a bit disparaging to slime, I better watch out or PETA may come after me.

Face it people, the injustice is ripe in the air and these idiots are sowing the seeds of change!   So to those in power just remember it’s good to be the king, that is until the revolution comes to town!

(Note to those with double digit IQs:  I am not advocating violence of any kind but I am a strong believer in activist democracy and recommend that we all  start by voting, that is vote for anything other than a Democrat or Republican and from there work your way up!)

You Can’t Read This Blog Entry in Tehran or Iran thanks to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

It has been a while since I wrote but with the Obama administration on the sidelines and the religious clergy trying desperately to stay in control in Iran you can only wonder who will give in first? The clergy and their “brown-shirt” guard or a populist rebellion they seek to decimate?  The Ayatollah Ali Khamenei defended the elections and warned that violent protesters would be dealt with.  Who cares that the violence is mostly the handiwork of his own guard, after all you are combating the twin demons of Israel and the U.S.  What Iranians are learning is that once you hitch your wagons to the clergy, that very same clergy is never quick to give up power.

Is this the corrupt nature of religion at work?  Actually, religion is not the problem but the men who claim to speak for god.  Notice I said men because for the most part few women are afflicted with this particular delusion of grandeur with the sole exception of  Joan of Arc.  Is this because women are smarter or saner than men?  No, it’s just that the men won’t let women play religious leader because they say god didn’t want it so.  Obviously, god has a penis and testicles hence his preference for male spiritual leaders and I guess you can consider this the new glass ceiling for women.

But I digress and of course, none of this nonsense makes sense but logic and religion are kind of anathema to one another.  I just recently had a conversation with a good friend and we enjoy the occasional argument.  He buys  the Fox Network line hook line and sinker but at least he will make good on a occasional money supply argument that I can’t really argue against.  Anyway, he made the point that without religion that most people were essentially morally rudderless and secularist/humanist were the worst offenders.  Besides being baseless, I think you can point to Tehran as an example of where unbridled religious power will get you.  I’ll take the secularists and humanists anytime.  And please don’t point to the communists because communism is a religion onto itself.

Once again there is mess in the Middle East and Americans don’t know how to respond.  When is this country going to wise up, stop acting like a petroleum crack baby and get off the oil habit so we can dry up the oil revenue to these losers?  The formula is simple, no money, no nuclear weapons and then we can blithely ignore these crackpots.  Maybe then the Iranian people can regain control over their destinies rather than be dictated to by these pious nuts and return the clerics back to their mosques where they belong.  Yes, the mess in the Middle East is partly our fault and the sooner we take measures to correct our bad habits then all the better.  The answer is less oil, not more.  The drill baby, drill nonsense just perpetuates this ongoing death spiral.  Besides, did you get a significant discount on domestic oil at the pump lately?  No , right?  Domestic oil gets priced,  how?  Well to market conditions that  are dictated by index fund speculators and OPEC.  Think about it when you buy that new SUV with your $4500 rebate check!

Cheers,

Erik John Bertel

More nonsense…I nearly tossed my cookies when a PETA rep made the comment that Obama was not the Buddha incarnate because Obama swatted and killed a pesky fly during a recent interview.  Get a clue will ya?  He’s a politician from Chicago not an arahant, enuf said!  I don’t know who’s fawning is more sickening:  the current left wing Obama mania or the right wing necromania for anything Reagan?  As to the interview I will say Obama does spends a lot of time on TV much more than Reagan.  He’s a good speaker, I mean he is better to listen to than Bush going “um, duh,” every five seconds but Obama is not that good!

How Authors Can Leverage Web 2.0 without Publishers

sarah_alone_in_jungleIn my alerts messages I came across a two year old article Kathryn Lively wrote titled “Can Book Giveaways Hurt Sales?”
(http://www.articlesbase.com/publishing-articles/can-book-giveaways-hurt-sales-86384.html) how about giveaways can hurt sales. It was a fairly amusing, almost quaint read and here are a few excerpts:

“That said, incentives are usually offered to fill the chat rooms with readers. Authors may give away a prize to one lucky reader, like a small gift or a free book. The question of whether or not it is prudent to distribute complimentary books as prizes has long been argued among authors, particularly in the eBook industry….Some authors condone the practice on the premise that a book in the hands of a reader may encourage that reader to buy more books.”

This is the amusing part…

“On the other hand, such generosity may backfire, according to other authors who condemn the practice. When you consider the tightly knit readership of eBooks, particularly in the romance genre, authors may tend to see the same Internet nicknames populating chats. If word gets around enough that free books are the prizes, an author might soon discover that he or she is giving away her entire catalog to the same readers without seeing any profits. An author can feel frustrated with the practice, and wonder if such regular contest winners will ever buy his/her book. …Should an author feel trapped, however? The answer is an emphatic no.”

“There are ways to successfully offer giveaways without giving away everything. While gifts like soaps, teas, and other trinkets can add up over time (though they are tax-deductible, authors, make notes!), there is one giveaway trick that can help stimulate sales. The next time you participate in a chat, write a one to two-thousand word story that reads as a supplement to your novel. It could be a sequel, a prequel, or a side story with supporting characters. Have it formatted as in eBook in HTML or PDF and offer it as an exclusive prize to one winner. Give it a try, and watch your readership grow.”

Not a bad idea but let’s be honest authors are a dime a dozen and we are more than willing to work as scabs to garner a reasonable readers base. It’s either that or go unread.  The article was only two years old but seemed like it was from another era. I replied to her with the following comment:

“I don’t know but with so many new electronic formats and delivery systems being created new authors kind of take it for granted that a giveaway is necessary to build a reader base. Basically, it is marketing 101 for the Internet. Of course, the same electronic revolution has created a flood of words that tends to overwhelm the limited pool of readers. The old self-publishing model is giving way to innovative sites such as Podiobooks.com that allow authors to give their work away as recorded audio podcasts while other sites such as Wattpad, Stanza and Scribd allow authors to giveaway select ebook works, all in hope of building a faithful audience. How authors can monetize their efforts is going to be an interesting challenge that I find myself wrestling with. My own novel, Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot became the inaugural featured novel at Wattpad and thousands are busily reading the novel on their iPhones. But to be honest with you reading novels on their iPhones, I mean who would have thunk it? It’s a brave new world in publishing and a giveaway is the least of the author’s and publisher’s problems!”

Cheers,
Erik John Bertel, Author Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot
floresgirl.com

Kathy wasn’t amused with my observations nor with my obvious efforts at self-promotion and she promptly deleted my comment. Still the point is valid; if you are worried about the couple of bucks you are going to miss with a giveaway then you have no clue about marketing in today’s Web 2.0. That’s why most books sell just a few thousand copies and why most authors go unread and unnoticed. If you are a new author, get the audience first and then worry about monetizing your writings. The days of the big advance and the old publishing machine are in the distant past. I’m not saying today is better and sure you will have to work two jobs for a while but hey, welcome to the machine. Nowadays, the Web 2.0 eats dinosaurs like the publishing and newspaper industry for breakfast!

Free eBooks and Wattpad: End to the Old Publishing Regime Part 2

Fortunately I had one lucky marketing surprise and found that it doesn’t matter what you genre you call a novel but if readers get a taste of something they like they will read it.  Let me explain.  As a fledgling author, I made Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot free as an eBook to get an audience and the twists and turns I have seen with my own pitifully small self-publishing efforts is amazing. One of my big surprises was with my Flores Girl on Wattpad. Wattpad makes eBooks available for downloading and reading on smartphones and frankly, I never figured so many people read novels on their phones. And fortunate for me they like Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot (check it out at WWW.iPhone-Novel.com).

To me, the tiny size of an iPhone or Blackbery screen made that exercise impractical at least to my particular mode of outdated fossil thinking. I mean who wants to read War and Peace on a BB?  On the other hand, as a former commuter, I realize that now it makes a lot of sense especially if you are blessed with a younger set of eyes. With your Smartphone you can escape to a world of music and prose away from the other human cattle you are sharing a ride with. And if you don’t like the book, you just download another.

eBooks will happen and like other authors I will have to figure out a way to monetize my writing efforts in the near future. But you know Amazon did not buy Stanza just because they had cash in their pockets.  Nobody knows how this is going to turn out but you can either get in front of the wave or drown in the resultant flood! I’ll swim, thank you!

Of Free eBooks, iPhones and Wattpad: End to Old School Publishing?

Sarah AloneSpeculative fiction is not fantasy fiction, as it rules out the use of anything as material which violates established scientific fact, laws of nature, call it what you will, i.e., it must [be] possible to the universe as we know it. – Robert A. Heinlein

A little while back I wrote:

One of the worst aspects of publishing work in a Web 2.0 world is the myriad tasks the author must undertake. Besides writing the novel the writer must undertake numerous sleazy marketing efforts. In the past that been relegated to the obligatory series of interviews and book signing, assuming that is if the author was lucky enough in his career or her to get to that point.

Today the challenges are different and far more varied. Most of the work still revolves around the writing, editing and marketing of the work. However the marketing piece of the puzzle is a bit of a quandary and requires the greatest flexibility on the part of the fledgling writer. Worse, it is also damn time consuming.

If you go the route of podcasting, which has its myriad appeals and challenges, it requires the author to do production work and possibly the biggest challenge of all: narrating the actual work. The web work can involve a site or minimally a blog for the author’s various fans to turn into. Besides words, structures these endeavors typically require some type of graphics, Search engine optimization and knowledge of key words; all daunting challenges for the uninitiated. If you have money you could have somebody else do it but you still must manage the ongoing mess.

The biggest marketing challenge could be the designation of your work into one of the existing genres. Why? That’s because the genre designation ultimately determines your readers and finally your choices among agents and publishers.

My problem was what the hell do you call Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot? Scif-Fi? Adventure? Romance?  It has all of those elements but what is best for marketing?  An adventure story sort of describes it but there were some science fiction elements as well to the story. After all the core of the story is about the survival of Homo floresiensis on a small tropical island and that is speculative at best. In actuality these small three-foot tall hominids died out 12,000 years ago or maybe as recently as 400 years ago based on some early historical accounts. In any case, nobody expects them to be found alive and well today, at least not with the way China is clear cutting the forests of Southeast Asia. To call it science fiction would really disappoint the hardcore science fiction fans; you know not enough hardware and overall fantasy elements to keep them enthralled to be quite honest with you. I mean if you can’t have sex with an alien then why bother calling it science fiction?

Then I came across the term speculative fiction and the Robert Heinlein definition. The definition seems appropriate for my book but its usage and acceptance as part of the vernacular is no where near as universally accepted as science fiction. As a measure of popularity I did a search fro speculative fiction and turned up only a couple of million hits in Google. Compare that with science fiction with nearly 140 million hits and you have yourself a huge disparity in overall acceptance. So which sandbox do you want to play in, the larger one where you won’t get noticed or the smaller one with a much smaller audience? As I found out perhaps the genre designation is a bit old school and my recent experience with the good folks at Wattpad has drastically changed my perception of the marektplace. I’ll tell you more tomorrow.
